There is a widespread notion that being admitted to a rehabilitation facility for getting rid of addiction is some sort of stigma – like being arrested for a crime. Families of patients often tell us, “We haven’t told anybody about the treatment…” Believe us, people already know! They know that he/she is an addict. They know that there is something seriously wrong. It is just that only now you have decided to DO something about it. Something positive and sensible.
Which is good. Because most people don’t understand this illness.
Some people also have this stereotypical idea that corporal punishment or harsh language is the order of the day at such institutions. You couldn’t be farther from the truth in this case. We believe that the right word, said in the right surroundings and context, at the right time, is the key to change. Ours is a program of self-identification, which can only be brought about by discipline and a nurturing environment conducive to learning.
We can promise you all this because we have seen the miracle unfold in our own lives – from hopeless addicts to willful converts. All life is precious. Let’s start by attaching a price tag to ours. Amen!
